ABOUT THE SEMINARY

THE PHILADELPHIA STUDENT

Our focus is on "formation of individuals for ministry in the midst of a community gathered around Jesus Christ." With fewer than 400 students matriculated (and about 75 others taking courses at any given time), LTSP is able to truly focus on the individual. The profile of the "average" seminarian has changed dramatically in the past decade. Second-career students comprise 75% of the student body; women 50%; persons of color or language other than English, 37%; and non-Lutherans, 35%. Students come from 20 states and 12 countries, representing over 20 denominations.students.jpg (20091 bytes)

Whether your goal is training for rostered ministry, pursuing a graduate degree, or enriching your life in the Christian faith, LTSP offers an appropriate study program with creative options to meet your needs.  The nine-month academic year is a 4-1-4 format with additional opportunities for study during the summer.

We offer five degrees:

  • M. Div. (Master of Divinity): preparation for ordained ministry
  • M.A.R. (Master of Arts in Religion): preparation for lay leadership
  • S.T.M. (Master of Sacred Theology): graduate degree in theology
  • D.Min. (Doctor of Ministry): second professional degree program

  • Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy): academic degree for vocations of teaching and research

For details, see Academic Information

Options for study:

  • Full-time (daytime with residency on campus or commuter)
  • Part-time (daytime or evening)
  • Resident Commuter – Classes are arranged Monday – Thursday afternoon.
  • Evening and Saturday classes (part-time)
  • Urban Theological Institute (UTI) – evening and Saturday classes with focus on African American and urban ministry
