TRAVEL ADVISORY: Germantown Avenue Construction Project

PennDOT will begin construction on Germantown Avenue with road restrictions on Germantown Avenue between Winston Road/Cresheim Valley Drive to the north and Nippon Street to the south of the LTSP campus on Monday, September 17, 2007. On-street parking will be eliminated and the road will be restricted to one northbound and one southbound travel lane. Further construction will begin in January 2008 and be completed in November 2008. Traffic congestion will increase as stopped SEPTA buses and turning vehicles can halt traffic flow. Allow extra time to reach campus. Most of the streets close to campus are residential, a good number are one-way, and a good number of streets do not go through the entire community. Crossing Germantown Avenue at intersections not controlled by traffic lights can be difficult.Your best route may be taking SEPTA Regional Rail, the R8 Chestnut Hill West (Allens Lane station) and R7 Chestnut Hill East (Mt. Airy station) stops are within blocks of campus. See www.septa.com. Note that SEPTA now charges a surcharge for tickets purchased on the train at any time, so plan to buy tickets at a station ticket counter.

Routes to LTSP during Germantown Avenue Construction: Your best approach is to get east of Germantown Avenue before you reach the construction area and then approach campus from the east using either Gowen Avenue to reach the Reed lot (avoiding Germantown Avenue altogether) or Mt. Airy Avenue to reach the Brossman lot via Germantown Avenue (for what may be a very slow-moving block).Stenton Avenue is the closest through street parallel to Germantown Avenue from the north; Ardleigh Street is the closest through street from the south that both parallels Germantown and connects to both Mt. Airy and Gowen Avenues.

Reaching the Reed Lot and campus using Gowen Avenue:

Head west on Gowen Avenue (towards Germantown Avenue). The Reed lot entrance will be on your left half way between Boyer Street and Germantown Avenue. If Germantown Avenue appears to be moving, you can continue and make a LEFT onto Germantown and then turn LEFT onto campus and park in the Brossman lot.

Coming from the PA Turnpike /East (including New Jersey, NY and New England):

Exit 6 of the New Jersey turnpike leads directly to the PA Turnpike (I-276) west. Take I-276 to the Fort Washington exit 339 and take PA 309 South - see below.

Taking PA 309 Southbound:

Take the Easton Road (Glenside) exit and turn RIGHT toward Philadelphia/Mt. Airy. Continue west as Easton Road turns into Wadsworth and then Mt. Airy Avenue. Mt. Airy Avenue leads to Germantown Avenue. Turn RIGHT onto Germantown and then RIGHT onto campus. If Germantown appears backed up, you can turn RIGHT onto Boyer Street (at Holy Cross Catholic Church) and procede to Gowen Avenue. Turn LEFT onto Gowen and turn LEFT into the Reed parking lot, more instructions above.

Coming from Lincoln Drive:

For a direct route from Lincoln Drive, turn RIGHT at Mt. Pleasant Avenue (CVS) and continue east, cross Germantown Avenue and head for the Reed lot by turning LEFT on Ardleigh (after the railroad underpass) and then LEFT onto Gowen (Grace-Epiphany Episcopal Church) - follow the Reed Lot/Gowen Avenue instructions above. There are a number of other roads that can get you to Ardleigh - see the map.

Alternately, if it looks like traffic is moving on Germantown, turn LEFT onto Germantown and continue to campus, or continue across Germantown one block and turn LEFT onto Chew Avenue, continue to Mt. Airy Avenue (T intersection), turn LEFT and then RIGHT onto Germantown Avenue.

Coming from Germantown Pike South/Eastbound:

From above Northwest Philadelphia, take Germantown Pike south - this turns into Germantown Avenue at the Philadelphia line. To reach Stenton Avenue and avoid the north (Chestnut Hill) end of the construction zone, stay on Germantown Pike to Nothwestern Avenue (Chestnut Hill College) and turn LEFT. Make a RIGHT at Stenton Avenue - the next light (past the Morris Arboretum) - and follow Stenton and make a RIGHT on Gowen Avenue (a large Presbyterian church will be on your left) - follow the Reed Lot/Gowen Avenue instructions above.

Coming from the Northeast PA and West (Harrisburg, Scranton):

If you are taking the southbound Northeast Extension (I-476) or eastbound PA Turnpike (I-76), take the Norristown exit 333 and follow the signs to Germantown Pike south/east - follow the Germantown Pike Southbound instructions above.

Coming from the South (Delaware, Washington):

If you are taking I-95 from Delaware/south take I-95 to I-476 Mid-County Expressway/Blue Route. Stay on I-476 north to the Germantown Pike south/east (Philadelphia) exit (just before the turnpike tolls, stay in the right lane). Take Germantown Pike - follow the from Germantown Pike Southbound instructions above.

Coming from the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) Westbound from Philadelphia/New Jersey:

From I-76 westbound, take the Lincoln Drive exit, follow the Lincoln Drive instructions above.

Coming from US 202, US 422, Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) Eastbound:

Take Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) east to I-476 north (Mid-County Expressway/Blue Route). Stay on I-476 north to the Germantown Pike south/east (Philadelphia) exit (just before the turnpike tolls, stay in the right lane). Take Germantown Pike - follow the from Germantown Pike Southbound instructions above.

Coming from Philadelphia International Airport: If driving, follow the signs to the Schuylkill Expressway west (I-76) and follow the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) Westbound instructions above.

Shuttle service to the seminary campus from the airport is available. Consult the Ground Transportation Desk in the baggage claim terminal. If taking SEPTA Regional Rail, take the R1 - Airport Line to the Market East Station and change to the R7 Chestnut Hill East. Get off at the Mt. Airy Station and walk west on Gowen Avenue to the campus. (note that some R1 trains become R7 Chestnut Hill East when they reach center city. Ask the conductor or check the schedules: septa.com)

Coming from Germantown Avenue Northbound:

Your best way to avoid the construction zone is to turn RIGHT at Sedgwick Avenue (ACME will be on your left) and go to Ardleigh Street (past the railroad underpass). Turn LEFT on Ardleigh and continue to Gowen Avenue (Grace Epiphany Episcopal Church on your left). Turn LEFT on Gowen - follow the Gowen Avenue instructions above.

Coming from Center City/University City Philadelphia:

Your best way to campus is to take SEPTA Regional Rail R7 Chestnut Hill East (Mt. Airy station stop) or R8 Chestnut Hill West (Allens Lane station stop). From the R7 Mt. Airy station, walk west on Gowen Avenue to the campus on your left. From R8 Allens Lane station, walk east on Allens Lane several blocks. You'll see the Wawa market and the campus as you approach Germantown Avenue. (hint: the R8 is the shorter ride from 30th Street Station, the R7 is the shorter ride from Market East station, schedules are somewhat staggered so check the schedule for each line. Either station is close and an easy walk to the seminary.)

If you are driving, take the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) westbound to the Lincoln Drive exit and follow the Lincoln Drive instructions above.
