CONTEXTUAL EDUCATION

Field Education

The typical MDiv student in the traditional curriculum undertakes a field education assignment for each of four semesters (the first two years of a full-time program). This practicum consists of working a limited number of hours each week (during the academic year) in a congregation or agency under the guidance of an approved supervisor. Students participate in worship planning, leadership, spiritual formation, visitations, and Christian education activities. In consultation with the Contextual Education Coordinator, students are assigned sites most appropriate to their discerned calls. Concurrent with the field education practicum is weekly participation in a formation group (see below).

Formation Groups
Formation Groups have three objectives: nurturing faith, integrating classroom and field education experiences, and developing pastoral identity.

The program is four semesters in length, normally the four semesters of the student's first two years of study, concurrent with each of the four quarters of required field education. Meeting weekly during the academic year, the formation group provides opportunities for reflection and discernment. Registration for field education includes assignment to a formation group, and successful completion of the field education unit requires satisfactory participation in the formation group.
