Pastor Richard Stewart has tended to shape his ministry and his studies around communication and congregational ministry. As congregational leaders plan, teach, preach, and administer, they focus on sharing both information and the skills for others to pass on information. That information in written and oral speech, music, the pictorial arts, the theater, dance, and in all sorts of human behavior are ways we share the Word of God. He believes that the leaders in congregational ministry are primarily communicators.
Pr. Stewart's task at the Seminary is to assist the preacher, the teacher, the teacher of teachers, the theologian in residence, the planner, and the administrator to communicate clearly. That communication will be focused to serve the needs of the congregation gathered in community and to serve the surrounding community. The congregations where we gather are to be Gods outposts for witness in todays world.
With a Bachelor of Arts from Wittenberg University in1967 and a Master of Divinity for Hamma School of Theology at Wittenberg in 1971, Pr. Stewart served as Pastor of Westwood Lutheran Church in Dayton, OH (71-73) [now New Hope Lutheran Church]. He was called as Director of InterFaith Campus Ministry at Central State University, (73-83),Wilberforce, OH. It was here that he returned to campus radio, an avocation that was started in college. Receiving a call from Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church, Christiansted, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, (83-89) Pr. Stewart served one of the older congregations in the ELCA. [The church was founded in 1734.] In 1989 Pr. Stewart became a member of the faculty of the Lutheran Theological Seminary.
Pr. Stewart's courses have been a blend of the elements of the practice of ministry in parish life and the theological and biblical foundations that support them as ministries of the church. Communications has been an integral part of all of the core courses Pr. Stewart has taught: Evangelism, Stewardship, and Church Administration.
