Education: B.A., Valparaiso University (History, Religion, Christ College), 1980 M.T.S., Trinity Lutheran Seminary (History, Theology, Society), 1983 Ph.D., The University of Chicago Divinity School (American Religious History; The History of Christianity, 1990) Jon Pahl, Ph.D. is Professor of the History of Christianity in North America at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. He has also served as Visiting Professor of Religion at Temple University, in Philadelphia, and as Visiting Professor of Religion at Princeton University. Jon Pahl received his baccalaureate degree from Valparaiso University in Indiana. His Masters was earned from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, where he wrote a thesis on "Old and New in the New Right." His Ph.D. came from the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1990, where he studied with the noted Lutheran historian Martin E. Marty. Dr. Pahl's dissertation was published as a book in 1992 by Johns Hopkins University Press, under the title: Paradox Lost: Free Will and Political Liberty in American Culture, 1630-1760. For twelve years, Pahl returned to Valparaiso to teach in its Theology Department. In addition to his work in the classroom, Dr. Pahl served St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Medaryville as a Deacon, and at First Christian Church in Valparaiso as a Youth Minister. He also founded the Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, which built three homes in four years with families in need. He continues to be active in social ministry, serving on the Board of Lutheran Settlement House in Philadelphia. He regularly preaches and teaches at area congregations. Recent Sunday forums he has led include "Are the Fundamentalists Winning?," "Sacred Spaces in America," "Lutherans 101," and "Holy War, Just War, and the Coming Religious Peace." Since joining the LTSP faculty in 2000, Dr. Pahl has taught classes in American Religious History, Lutherans in America, Film and Religion, and Violence and Religion. Dr. Pahl has published dozens of articles, essays, columns, and reviews, in publications such as Religion in American Culture; Church History; Currents in Theology and Ministry; and The Philadelphia Inquirer. He has published four books, including Hopes and Dreams of All: The International Walther League, and Lutheran Youth in American Culture, 1893-1993 (1993; 2006); Youth Ministry in Modern America: 1930-the present (Hendrickson, 1999), and Shopping Malls and Other Sacred Spaces: Putting God in Place (Brazos, 2003). He has spoken to audiences around the globe, from Ankara, Turkey to Anaheim, California. Dr. Pahl is an avid sports fan and amateur musician who sits in on the alto saxophone with gospel choirs and blues bands.
