What do we have to say to our busy and unconcerned neighbors about God and the church? When we study their lifestyle carefully, we discover that they have deep needs that are not being met. If we focus our contacts with them on these needs, we can sharpen our mission efforts and discover the joy of "making a difference" in other people’s lives. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. H. George Anderson, immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Anderson will address the topic, "Keeping Your Mission Edge Sharp." Anderson was elected bishop of the ELCA in 1995. He is the author of many works on Lutheran history.

The Magnet Church Consultation is presented by The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) and a planning committee of church leaders from the Northeastern and Southeastern Pennsylvania Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is hosted by a different congregation each year.

The Planning Committee consists of the Rev. Arden Krych (co-chair), St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Springfield, PA; Professor Margaret Krych (co-chair), LTSP; Bishop Roy Almquist, Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod; Bishop David Strobel, Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod; the Rev. John Richter, Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing, PA; the Rev. Dr. Philip D. W. Krey, President, LTSP; the Rev. Alton Roberts, Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Emmaus, PA; the Rev. Larry Smoose, Reformation Lutheran Church, Media, PA; the Rev. Rick Summy, Director of Admissions, LTSP; the Rev. John Pearson, Pastor, St. John Lutheran Church Boyertown, PA; the Rev. Stephen Godsall-Myers, Pastor, Calvary Lutheran Church West Chester, PA; and Mr. Mark Staples, Director of Communications, LTSP.

Our host congregation, Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Chester, PA, was organized in 1924 and has an average weekend worship attendance of 585, offering three Sunday morning services. The church’s mission is: to make Christ known through worship and prayer, learning and teaching, outreach and acts of love. Christ the King Lutheran Church of the Deaf, a sister church to Calvary, worships in Calvary’s chapel each Sunday morning. Calvary is served by Pastors Stephen Godsall-Myers and William Seamon-McGowan. Also on staff are a parish deaconess, a director of Youth and Family ministries, a director of Volunteer ministries, and several music leaders. .

Augsburg Fortress will set up shop for the day with a special selection of books and materials.
