Seven sermons by seven distinguished African American preachers and theologians comprise the 2003 Preaching With Power Forum on Black Preaching and Theology March 16-21. This year, Preaching with Power begins with a special kickoff service on March 10. No registration is necessary for the events, nor are any fees required. This year, one of the events will be held on the seminary campus with the rest planned for nearby congregations.
Continuing Education Units (1.0 CEUs) are available for those attending all sessions. Contact the seminary’s registrar at 215/248-6305. For additional information, contact the seminary’s public information office at 215/248-6311.
The Urban Theological Institute offers African American leaders the opportunity to expand their credentials through continuing education studies evenings and weekends. Bishop
Wagner is pastor of the Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church in Youngstown,
OH, and currently serves as Presiding Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies
of the World, Inc., the oldest chartered oneness organization. Bishop
Wagner’s local ministry built and manages an apartment complex, Calvary
Towers, that provides housing for senior citizens and the physically
handicapped. He also founded Calvary Christian Academy, a school for
children ages kindergarten through 12. In addi-tion, Bishop Wagner has
established the Guardian Angel Management Corporation, an entity that
provides talent and career management to individuals involved in singing
and speaking ministry.

Dr.
Johnson Cook is the first female president in the his-tory of the 10,000-member
Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, the largest gathering of African
American clergy in the world. For more than 20 years, Dr. Johnson Cook
has been a champion of civil rights, a motivational speaker, pastor,
public servant and community leader. After a 13-year pastorate at the
historic Mariners’ Temple in lower Manhattan, NY, she became the founder
and senior pastor of the Bronx Christian Fellowship, the Bronx’s fastest
growing new church. Dr. Johnson Cook is co-founder and Chief Operating
Officer of JONCO Productions, Inc., a sales, management and diversity
firm that hosts a speaker’s bureau and media/book distributions.

The Rev. Dr. Charles Booth
Dr.
Booth is the pastor of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Columbus,
OH, a position he has held since 1978. In 1993, Dr. Booth founded the
Mount Olivet Christian Academy. The academy provides grades kindergarten
through sixth with a curriculum emphasizing excel-lence in academics,
African and African-American History, and Christian education. Dr. Booth
was listed on the Honor Roll of Great Preachers by Ebony magazine
in November 1993 and was the keynote speaker at the 12th Annual Martin
Luther King, Jr. Breakfast at the Columbus Convention Center in January
1997. His book, Bridging the Breach: Evangelical Thought and Liberation
in the African American Preaching Tradition,was published by Urban
Ministries in 2000.

The Rev. Janet Jenkins Sturdivant
Pastor
Jenkins Sturdivant serves St. John African Methodist Episcopal (AME)
Church in Wayne, PA. She was ordained an Itinerant Elder in the AME
Church in 1992. In 1998, Jenkins Sturdivant was the first woman in 182
years to preach the annual sermon for the Philadelphia Annual Conference
of the AME Church. She currently serves as a recruiter for the Urban
Theological Institute (UTI) at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at
Philadelphia. The UTI, co-sponsor of Preaching with Power, offers continuing
education to African American church leaders. Also, she serves as president
of the Philadelphia Annual Conference Department of Evangelism of the
AME Church.

Pastor
Felton is the senior pastor of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in
Kalamazoo, MI. Since beginning his pastorate in November 1991, he has
increased church membership by more than 700 members, bringing total
membership to 1,100. Pastor Felton led the March Against Youth Violence
in Kalamazoo in October 1994, which led to the creation and funding
of a local Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence. He is a board
member for The Kalamazoo County Family YMCA, The Council of Michigan
Foundations, The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and The Kalamazoo Valley
Habitat for Humanity. He also led the acquisition and remodeling of
a multi-purpose ministries building for his church.

Pastor
Crawford serves as senior pastor of First St. Paul AME Church in Lithonia,
GA. He also serves as assistant professor of Clinical Medicine at the
Morehouse School of Medicine and is an expert on incorporating spirituality
into health care. Currently, he is Clerkship Director of Internal Medicine
and Ambulatory Medicine as well as the attending physician for Morehouse
Medical Associates Affiliate Institutions. In 2002, Dr. Crawford was
awarded the National Science Foundation Historically Black Colleges
and Universities Award from Albany State University in Albany, GA, and
the Faculty of the Year Award. Presently he is doing research in the
area of factors influencing end-of-life decision making in an indigent
population.

Pastor
Jerome D. Taylor serves Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Roosevelt,
NY. He has served as first vice-chair on the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America’s (ELCA) Commission for Multicultural Ministries and as a
member of the African American Lutheran Association. Currently, Pastor
Taylor is a diakonia instructor and was appointed by the Metropolitan
New York Synod to represent the synod as a board member of the Long
Island Council of Churches. Among other calls, he served as chaplain
of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, NY, and as a member for
the Committee for Racial Justice on Health Care in Nassau County, NY.
