Six sermons and one lecture by seven distinguished African American preachers and theologians comprise the 2004 Preaching With Power Forum on Black Preaching and Theology March 15-19. No registration is necessary for the events, nor are any fees required. This year, two of the events will be held on the seminary campus with the rest planned for nearby congregations. PERKINS Dr. James Perkins has served as pastor of Greater Christ Baptist Church in Detroit, MI, for 20 years. He received his D.Min. degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH, in 1990. Dr. Perkins is the author of Building Up Zion’s Walls: Ministry for Empowering the African American Family (Judson), now in its second printing. He fulfills speaking engagements at seminaries, churches and conferences across the U.S., Africa and in Central America. In his ministry he has founded the Fellowship Nonprofit Housing Corporation (1992) and an educational program for young African American males, the Benjamin E. Mays Male Academy (1993). Stories about his approach to community activism have appeared in such publications as Black Enterprise, USA Today, Ebony and the American Baptist. [report online]
Dr. Gladys Willis is dean of the School of Humanities and Graduate Studies at Lincoln University in Lincoln University, PA, where she has taught since 1977. Earlier, she taught English as an assis-tant professor or instructor at Manhattan Community College, New York, NY; Rider College, Trenton, NJ; Cheyney State College, Cheyney, PA, and Jackson State College in Mississippi. Dr. Willis has been an education representative and investigator for the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. She serves as a pastor at First Redemption Evangelical Church in Philadelphia. Dr. Willis received her M.A. in English Literature from Michigan State University, where she was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and a Ph.D. in English Literature from Princeton University. She received her M.Div. from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia as a scholar in the Urban Theological Institute. She plans to discuss "Alice Walker’s Womanist Idea and Womanist Theology," a book work currently in progress. [report online]
Dr. Harold Lewis is serving as senior pastor of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., where he has instituted a mentoring program at a neighborhood elementary school and initiated a community drama ministry. A native of Greenwood, MS, he served five years there as pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church. While serving in Mississippi, he was the founder and CEO of Motivating and Affirming the Genius in Children (MAGIC), an organization awarded a $1.6 million grant to invest in community rehabilitation. In Greenwood he also started a Family Resource Center offering GED classes, parenting classes, grief support and teen pregnancy awareness programs, adult basic education and an after school tutorial initiative. He earned his M.Div. degree from the Interdenominational Theological Seminary in Atlanta, GA. [report online]
Pastor Ethelyn Taylor, a native of Philadelphia, is the pastor of Philadelphia’s Oxford Presbyterian Church. Before becoming a parish pastor, she taught in the Philadelphia public school system for 25 years. Subsequently on a part-time basis, she taught in the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Education, training senior students in preparation afor public school teaching careers. After retiring from teaching in 1990, she earned an M.Div. degree from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and was ordained in the Presbyterian Church USA in 1994. Her many duties on behalf of the Philadelphia Presbytery have included serving as moderator of the Child Advocacy Committee. She is the Presbytery's newly elected Moderator. [report online]
Pastor Anthony Wilcots has served Liberty Baptist Church in Elizabeth, NJ, since 1996. The con-gregation has three worship services each Sunday and is experiencing a growth of biblical knowl-edge matched with the understanding of practical application. A native of Houston, TX, Pastor Wilcots earned his M.Div. degree from Oral Roberts University, a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Yale Divinity School and is pursuing a Ph.D. in social ethics from Drew University. His evangelistic ministry has taken him to college campuses, churches and tent crusades around America and overseas. [report online]
Dr. Grainger Browning is the senior pastor of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church, Fort Washington, MD. A native of Cambridge, MA, Pastor Browning has served the Maryland congre-gation for 20 years. Under his leadership the congregation has grown from 17 to more than 10,000 members with more than 100 ministries and an annual budget exceeding $10 million. The congregation annually awards $2 million in scholarships for high school graduates and returning college students. The current focus is to expand the congregation’s ministry to include an elementary school, day care center, family life center, recreation complex, senior citizen housing, homeless shelter, drug treatment facility and outreach center. Dr. Rudolph Featherstone says that the phrase that most accurately describes him, his life calling and commitment is that he is "a janitor for Jesus!" Born and reared in Washington, D.C., Dr. Featherstone retired two years ago from his post as professor of Cross Cultural Theological Studies and Mission at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, OH. Prior to joining the faculty at Trinity as associate professor of Theology and Ministry, Dr. Featherstone served as pastor of congregations in the Bronx and Jamaica, both in New York; and in Detroit, MI. He’s a graduate of Gettysburg College and The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. During his career he has been intensely involved in the Conference of International Black Lutherans.
