Health care is changing. The church is called to be
a partner in fashioning a more just and effective system for all people.
This conference will provide an educational forum and resources related
to health ministry: At the end of this session participants will be
able to:
- Describe the role of parish nurses and healthcare advocates in securing
and providing information to patients/families and caregivers.
- Discuss how their language about God and theology impacts their
work and health ministry.
- Explore some of the complementary therapies in health care today.
Workshops
- Consumer Information: Access, Use and Misuse. Consumers have
much more access to healthcare information today than ever before.
The Internet has spawned a limitless database for everything from
exotic diseases to credible resources for patients, families, and
caregivers. Using the discussion format, this workshop will focus
on how parish nurses and healthcare advocates can help patients learn
to choose and evaluate the best sources of information. The session
will also deal with the misuse of information: confidentiality, rights
of privacy, and legal issues.
- Healthy Language in the Church. How does our understanding
of God (theology) impact upon our health, the language we use in worship
and our work in health ministry. Participants will reflect upon their
understanding of God and how that understanding impacts health. They
will examine how "healthy theology" is essential to their
health ministry work.
- Complementary Therapies and Health Ministry. What are the
complementary therapies in health care today? Do they have a legitimate
place in health ministry? This workshop will explore three of the
complementary therapies, their role in the healing process and how
they can be incorporated into congregational health ministry.
