Six sermons and one lecture by seven distinguished African American preachers and theologians comprise Preaching with Power: A Forum on Black Preaching and Theology. Local churches within the community host the evening worship services. All are welcome! Come and be inspired!

The worship offering proceeds go to The Rev. Dr. Joseph Quinton Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund, which benefits UTI students.

The Rev. Dr. Millicent Hunter

The Rev. Dr. G. Daniel Jones, Pastor

Dr. Hunter is the Presiding Bishop of the Worship Center Worldwide Fellowship of Churches with 71 churches in the United States and South Africa. She is also Founder and Senior Pastor of The Baptist Worship Center of Philadelphia, PA. Starting with five members in a row house in West Philadelphia, the ministry has grown to over 3,000 members in less than ten years. Bishop Hunter is also an award-winning author of several books including the bestseller Don't Die in the Winter...Your Season is Coming. Additionally, she has served as Dean of the Sanctuary Bible Institute and as an adjunct professor at various colleges and universities.

Dr. N. Lynne Westfield

Dr. Westfield is Associate Professor of Religious Education at Drew University in Madison, NJ. with a joint appointment in the Casperson Graduate School and The Theological School. She has been a consultant, preacher, teacher and poet on issues of African American women, religion, spirituality and education for more than fifteen years in the United States, Great Britain, Japan, Ghana, Israel and Cuba. Dr. Westfield is the author of Dear Sisters: A Womanist Practice of Hospitality. Her most recent work focuses on prayer as African American religious phenomena and the teaching practices and role of Africa American professors in theological
education. Dr. Westfield is the former Minister of Christian Education at The Riverside Church in New York City.

Bishop Gregory Vaughn Palmer

Bishop Palmer is the Resident Bishop of the Iowa Area of the United Methodist Church. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Bishop Palmer served for more than 20 years in parishes in North Carolina and Ohio, and as Youngstown United Methodist District Superintendent he was consecrated as a bishop in July 2000. Bishop Palmer was voted Presidsent-designate of the nearly 11 million member United Methodist Church by the Council of Bishops in November 2005. Bishop Palmer is a contributing author of Becoming Jesus; Prayer: Transforming Your Life Through the Lord's Prayer, to be published by the Pilgrim Press in late March 2006.

The Rev. Dr. Stephen G. Ray, Jr.

Dr. Ray is Associate Professor of African American Studies and Director of the Urban Theological Institute. He joined the LTSP faculty after serving six years as Associate Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He has taught courses at Yale Divinity School and Hartford Seminary. Dr. Ray is the author of several published works including A Struggle from the Start: The Black Community of Hartford, 1639-1960 and Do No Harm: Social Sin and Christian Responsibility. He is working on several writing projects including a collaborative of the Black Religious Scholars Group of the American Association of Religion. Dr. Ray is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ.

The Rev. Dr. Leonard Lovett

Dr. Lovett has served over two decades of pastoral ministry in Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Atlanta. He has taught at several seminaries, including Fuller Theological Seminary, Graduate Theological Union and the Oral Roberts Graduate School of Theology, and is the pioneer Dean Emeritus of CH Mason Seminary, an affiliate of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA. He is also the first Ecumenical Officer of Urban Affairs for the Church of God in Christ and the founding CEO of Seminex Ministries. His books, Close Your Back Door and Kingdom Beyond Color, are scheduled for re-publication in 2006.

Dr. Flake, recognized as a powerful preacher, teacher and role model with a gift for reaching worshippers of all ages, is an itinerant Elder in the AME Church. She has long been impacting lives at the Greater Allen Cathedral (GAC), which has a membership of over 15,000. She and her husband, the Rev. Floyd H. Flake, founded the Allen Christian School in 1982, providing a competitive education and a special curriculum to over 600 African American students. Dr. Flake is the author of the popular book, God in Her Midst: Preaching Healing to Hurting Women.

Friday, March 24, 7:30 p.m.
The Rev. Dr. G. Neriah Kwame Paul

The Rev. Arthur A. Gilbert, Pastor

Dr. Paul (formerly known as the Rev. Dr. Derrick Paul Gomez) served two Lutheran congregations in the Metro New York Synod from 1981 to 2002. He was then called by the ELCA Division for Outreach to serve as the Mission Director in the New England Synod, and since 2006, the Mission Director of the North Carolina Synod. As mission director, some of his duties include assisting the synod in starting new and renewing existing congregations. The Rev. Neriah leads workshops and Church Council trainings that focus on church growth.

The Urban Theological Institute offers:

  • An accredited graduate level theological education for African American congregation leaders to become bi-vocational or full-time pastoral ministers.
  • The opportunity to develop theological skills to enhance the ministry of laypersons.
