Katie Day Schieren Endowed Chair Award Ceremony

Katie DayOn Tuesday, May 2, 2006, The Rev. Dr. Katie Day was presented with the Charles Schieren Endowed Chair during an official ceremony at the seminary’s Benbow Hall in The Brossman Learning Center.

Dr. Day received a warm reception from LTSP faculty, staff, and students. After accepting the chair, she presented her inaugural address -- "Theology and Social Science: Imagining a New Partnership." In her address, Dr. Day suggested that there are three ways in which social science can constructively contribute to theology:

  1. As a tool for self-critique
  2. To help crystallize questions
  3. For the instruction of quantitative and qualitative research methods

Dr. Day is Professor of Church and Society and Director of the Metropolitan/Urban Concentration at LTSP. She has been teaching at LTSP since 1985 in the area of Church and Society. Her courses -- such as "The Congregation in the Community," "Alienation and Reconciliation," and "Economic Ethics" -- draw heavily on the social sciences.
