NEWS Reformers have clues for living out faith today Philadelphia Seminary's Tim Wengert Keynoter for Magnet Church event March 30 News Update: Meeting Report now online How can the church help people to more effectively live out their faith in a complex and pluralistic society? The teachings of the Reformers may serve as a powerful guide to the challenge, believes Professor Timothy J. Wengert, who teaches the Lutheran Confessions and Reformation History at The Lutheran theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Wengert will be the keynoter Friday, March 30, when the Seminary and the Northeastern and Southeastern Pennsylvania Synods co-sponsor the seventh annual Magnet Church Consultation at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Springfield, PA (Delaware County). The Consultation is a day of continuing education aimed at leaders of growing churches or churches desiring to grow in their mission for Christ. Tim Wengert's keynote address will be at 9:40 a.m. During the day five workshops on the theme will also be offered in an atmosphere of collegial learning. Wengert will lead one on "Luther's Catechism Today." Dr. Gordon Lathrop, the Seminary's Charles Schieren Professor of Practical Theology, will lead a workshop on "The Adult Catechumenate." Dr. Margaret Krych, the Seminary's Charles Norton Professor of Christian Education, will direct a session on "Multiple Settings for Education for the Whole People of God." "Education/Evangelism Ministry for Youth and Families" will be led by Dr. Roland Martinson, Professor of Pastoral Care at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. "Evangelizing the Unchurched/Seekers" will be taught by the Rev. Marta Poling Goldenne, Director for Witness, the Division for Congregational Ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Lathrop and Krych are featured authors in the winter edition of the Seminary's Parish Practice Notebook issue on the Adult Catechumenate. The newsletter is created for professional leaders. Martinson is one of this year's Hein-Fry Lecture Series presenters on the theme "Spiritual but not Religious: Reaching Lost Generations: Understanding mission among 18-30 year olds." That series on topics of current theological interest is offered at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's eight seminaries each year. Registration for the Magnet Church event is $45. After March 20 a late fee of of $5 will be added to all registrations. The fee includes all events, coffee and lunch. Questions and requests for information may be directed to the Rev.
