A Forum on Black Preaching and Theology

(PHILADELPHIA, February 2001)--Six sermons will be offered this year by six distinguished African American preachers and theologians, comprising the 2001 Preaching with Power Forum on Black Preaching and Theology March 12-16. Each sermon is followed by an opportunity to converse with the preacher about sermon development. No registration, nor any fees, are required. This year, one of the events will be held on the Seminary’s campus with the rest planned at nearby congregations.

The Rev. Charles E. Booth

 

Pastor Booth has served Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Columbus, OH, since 1978. Under his direction the congregation has completed a $2.1 million building program. He is also the founder of a Christian Academy at Mt. Olivet, teaching grades kindergarten through six. A widely sought-after preacher and lecturer, Pastor Booth teaches preaching at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus and previously taught preaching at United Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH. Born in Baltimore, MD, Pastor Booth holds a BA from Howard University, Washington, D.C.; an M.Div. from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia; a D.Min. from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH, and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Virginia Seminary in Lynchburg, VA. He is also the author of Bridging the Breach: Evangelical Thought and Liberation in the African American Preaching Tradition (Urban Ministries, 2000).

Bishop J. Delano Ellis, II

Bishop Ellis is the Senior Pastor for the Pentecostal Church of Christ in Cleveland, OH. He is the Presiding Bishop for the United Pentecostal Churches of Christ, with world headquarters in Cleveland, OH and Bishop of the Apostolic See (Diocese of Ohio). Bishop Ellis is also President and General Manager of The Pentecostal Apartments and Pentecostal Plaza in Cleveland. He is Chaplain (Major) in the Civil Air Patrol of the United States Air Force Auxiliary and chairs the African-American Pentecostal Bishops Conference. He holds a B.A. from Howard University, a Master of Religious Education from the Nazarene Seminary, Institute, WV, and a Doctor of Sacred Theology from C.H. Mason Theological Seminary, Memphis, TN.

The Rev. Dr. Thomas Gayle Snowden

Dr. Snowden is the retired former Professor of Philosophy, Sociology and Human Services at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA. He is also the former Adjunct Professor of Social Systems at the Graduate School of Lincoln University in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Snowden is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and has served as a pastor/educator for 39 years. He’s held pastorates in Toronto, Ont., Canada; in Maryland and Philadelphia. From 1988 to 1994 Dr. Snowden served as Eucharistic Minister and Resident Preacher at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia’s Germantown section. He serves in the same capacity currently at the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in Philadelphia’s Overbrook section.

The Rev. Dr. Will L. Herzfeld

Dr. Herzfeld serves as Associate Executive Director of the Division for Global Mission for the 5.2-million-member Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He gives oversight to the denomination’s international program, which puts the church in partnership with 70 Lutheran church bodies and 25 other churches and institutions. He also oversees the placement of some 300 missionaries and volunteers with an annual budget of $16 million. Dr. Herzfeld has served as Vice President of the National Council of Churches of Christ (1995-99) and President of Church World Service and Witness. Other formerly held positions include his having served as Vice Chair of the Oakland, CA, Mayor’s Earthquake Relief Committee, Vice-President for Lutheran World Relief and serving as a founding member of the Urban Strategies Council.

The Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning

Dr. Browning is Senior Pastor of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, MD, where his wife, the Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Grainger also serves as Co-Pastor. He has served the congregation since 1983, when the congregation had 17 members and a budget of $12,000. Today membership exceeds 10,000 with a budget of more than $8 million. The congregation has more than 100 ministries focusing on the spiritual, educational, political, social, recreational, economic and health needs of the community. The congregation features a 3,000-seat worship center built in 1994. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Washington Conference of the AME Church, Wilberforce (OH) University and Payne Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH. He is a 1974 graduate of Hampton (VA)University, where he was awarded a B.S. in History-Education. He was awarded an M.Div. from Howard University Divinity School in 1982, and a D.D. from Payne Theological Seminary in 1990. He has been invited to preach and lecture in South and West Africa and Cairo, Egypt. Ebenezer has future plans for facilities expansion to include an elementary school, day care center, family life center, recreation complex, senior citizen housing, a homeless shelter, drug treatment facility and outreach center.

Bishop Barbara M. Amos

Bishop Amos is a pastor, lecturer, preacher and teacher. She is the founder and director of Faith Deliverance Christian Center, Inc., an inner city ministry in Norfolk, VA that seeks to meet the diverse needs of the community. As senior pastor she directs a ministry to the homeless, a street-evangelism ministry, a prison ministry, substance abuse programs and an HIV/AIDS ministry. She has also founded two schools, the Master’s Touch Learning Center and Faith Academy School of Excellence for students from pre-school through eighth grade. Bishop Amos has also established adult education and community economic development classes and a Rites of Passage program to assist teens in their transition to adulthood. Bishop Amos holds a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from Hampton University and has done graduate studies in Social Work at Norfolk State University, both in Virginia. She earned her M.Div. magna cum laude from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA.

The 20-year-old Urban Theological Institute offers African American Leaders the opportunity to expand their backgrounds through continuing education studies evenings and weekends. A college degree is required for enrollment.
