About Preaching Days

For more than 15 years, Preaching Days has been gathering clergy from a variety of denominations to discover and explore fresh insights, enhance skills and share perspectives on preaching. Each day features a sermon, lecture and a workshop. The event offers free time for reflection on and renewal of one's preaching.

Worship at Preaching Days is ecumenical, reflecting the diverse denominational traditions of the participants.

Three options for registration are available as defined on the attached registration form. You can register on a daily basis for one or two of the three preacher/presenters. Lunch is included in this option. Or, you can register for the full program as a commuter, taking part in the worship, lectures, lunch and workshops all three days. Finally, you can enroll as a resident for the full program, including room and board Sunday through Thursday, breakfast and lunch Monday through Wednesday, plus participation in the full program. If you have questions after reviewing the brochure, contact Rick Summy at 215/248-6304 or email him at rsummy@ltsp.edu.

He earned a B.A. from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA, in 1959, and received his M.Div. and S.T.M. degrees from LTSP in 1962 and 1964 respectively. "My workshop will focus on care for caregivers and the lingering impact on the communities involved with disasters. People will have an opportunity to discuss the peculiar issues that arise based on whether the disaster is natural (Dakotas, Minnesota, the Virgin Islands) or human (Oklahoma City, Jonesboro, Little Rock)."

--Foster R. McCurley

Rabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer

Nancy Fuchs-KreimerRabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer is currently Director of the Jewish Identity Program of the Jewish Family and Children's Service of Greater Philadelphia. She is on leave from her position as Director of Religious Studies at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia, where she was ordained in 1982. Rabbi Fuchs-Kreimer is a graduate of Wesleyan University, holds a Master's degree from Yale Divinity School and a Ph.D. from Temple University in Religion. She has been involved with interreligious dialogue for many years and has taught Jewish-Christian Relations at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia on many occasions.

"Often in lieu of a sermon, Jewish groups will engage in a guided study of midrash. My workshop will explore what we can learn together from this practice. How does the leader select the texts? How does the leader guide the group as they engage the material and create a sacred learning experience? What are the challenges and opportunities in this approach to 'preaching'?"

The Rev. Dr. William B. McClain

William B. McClainThe Rev. Dr. William B. McClain is Professor of Homiletics and Worship at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. He teaches preaching regularly for the Urban Theological Institute of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. In 1978 Dr. McClain was named founding Executive Director of the Multi-Ethnic Center for Ministry of the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church, located at Drew University in Madison, NJ. For 10 years before that he was senior pastor at the historic Union United Methodist Church in Boston, MA. Dr. McClain received his A.B. degree summa cum laude from Clark University in Atlanta, GA. His Masters and Doctoral degrees were earned at Boston University. In 1991, Clark Atlanta University recognized his accomplishments in civil rights, religion and service in social change by awarding him an honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology. He is the author of many books and articles. He is also well known for having conceived of the book Songs of Zion, featuring religious songs from the African American tradition (Abingdon, 1981). The book is in widely popular use.

"In my workshop we'll explore how a multicultural perspective can strengthen our approach to dealing with issues of pain and suffering more powerfully in our preaching."

William B. McClain

Financial Aid

Registration fees for Preaching Days are $70 per day, $195 for three days. A residence program, including registration, room, and board, is also available for $255. Many congregations provide funding for continuing education for their pastors. If yours does not, Preaching Days is a perfect event for beginning such a fund. Contact the Rev. Rick Summy at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, 215/248-6304, for information on how such funds are established.

The Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania will cover one-half of the costs of the daily program registration for all Episcopal clergy, lay professionals and seminarians.

Endowed Lectures

The Somerville Lecture is supported by First Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, PA, in memory of G. Ernest Somerville, a founding member of the Academy of Preachers Board. The Lundin Lecture is supported by Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing, PA, in memory of Richard R. Lundin, a pastor of the congregation who was active in supporting Preaching Days. Funding for the Stephenson Lecture is made possible by a generous gift from longtime Academy Board member, the Rev. Dr. James R. Stephenson, and his spouse, Loretta.
