The Hein-Fry Lecture Series

Biblical Preaching in Babel
Preaching in a Post-Christian World

Peter Gomes

The Rev. Dr. Peter Gomes
Plummer Professor of Christian Morals & Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard University

Tuesday, February 19
8:30 a.m. (Preaching Service)
9:30 a.m. (Lecture)
11:30 a.m. (Lecture)

A feature of living in an age of "post-Christendom" is that one cannot assume listeners have a familiarity with Scripture. A great many persons never or only rarely employ its declarations, themes and images in interpreting their lives and the world. How may genuine biblical preaching be best employed in an era marked by large migrations, different languages and a media-driven culture, making it less likely than ever that listeners share common experiences and stories? Distinguished preaching teacher Peter Gomes will explore the challenge. The Hein-Fry Lectures are an endowed series of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America fostering original scholarship and enriching theological dialogue throughout the church. For information contact the Rev. Dr. J. Paul Rajashekar, Dean of the Seminary, at 215/248-6306, rajashekar@ltsp.edu.
