Philadelphia (March 2002) -- In a society divided by race, ethnicity, culture, age, sexuality and other worldly points of view, Christians are called to be ambassadors for Christ and God’s ministers of reconciliation, believes Pastor Craig J. Lewis. Lewis, whose congregation, Central Lutheran Church, in Minneapolis has 3,700 members, was this year’s Lutheran preacher for the 20th annual Preaching with Power forum. Preaching with Power is sponsored by The Urban Theological Institute (UTI) at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. The UTI offers African American church leaders an opportunity to expand their backgrounds through continuing education studies. Seven distinguished African American preachers and theologians, including Pastor Lewis, delivered sermons during the week of March 10-15 for the event. Visiting presenters preached on both the Seminary’s campus and in pulpits of community churches. Each preaching service was followed by a workshop where preachers taught about how they applied their craft in developing their message. All events in the annual Preaching With Power forums are open to the public free of charge. The Rev. Craig J. Lewis has served as senior pastor at Central Lutheran Church, downtown Minneapolis, since March 1999. Prior to that, Pastor Lewis for nine years was executive assistant to the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Earlier in his career, he was selected the executive director of the church body’s Commission for Multicultural Ministries. During the 1980s he served the former Lutheran Church in America as assistant director and later director for theological education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College and a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School. [read sermon outline]
