Seminarians "on the bus"

Seminarian Romeo Dabee, shown standing in the photo to the right, describes what he learned about the Global Ministry vision of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America when he and other seminarians visited church headquarters this academic year. The seminarians added a spark to their presentation by simulating the van ride they took to the Upper Midwest on their mid-year learning journey. The seminarians were hosted by a number of churchwide offices, enabling them to gain a more complete perspective on the work of the ELCA. They also described their visit to the Willow Creek Megachurch and got a taste of the work of Operation PUSH and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Seminarian Katie Lyon described the globalization trip seminarians took in mid-year to help with home-repair projects of Gullah peoples on Johns Island, SC. The seminarians in the project said their service had given them a renewed perspective, chance to "be less closed-minded…to see that people living in America occupy houses that are falling apart…to see the importance of supporting others to live lives with dignity."

Katie Lyon said she had learned that disadvantaged people may come to see themselves in the negative way the majority of people in society see them. She noted that the household repairs and conversations with their hosts had offered a chance to "give back some of the value society took away."
