Preaching with Power - March 10-14, 2008

Five sermons and one lecture by six distinguished African American preachers and theologians, and a celebration of black sacred music comprise Preaching with Power: A Forum on Black Preaching and Theology. Local churches within the community host the evening worship services. All are welcome! Come and be inspired!

The worship offering proceeds go to The Rev. Dr. Joseph Q. Jackson Endowed Scholarship Fund, which benefits UTI students.

The Reverend Dr. Alison Gise-Johnson is Dean of Students for the 2008 Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference. Dr. Gise-Johnson holds a PhD in Religion from Temple University, an MDiv from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, and a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University. In addition, she has studied abroad in Ghana, The Netherlands, Paris, Rome and London. Dr. Gise-Johnson served as Assistant Professor of Historical and Theological Studies at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. She currently teaches graduate courses in Womanist Theology and Ethics, Christian Ethics, and United States Religious History and Perspectives in Black Theology focusing on the life and works of Howard Thurman. Dr. Gise-Johnson has served churches
in Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Reverend Dr. Barbara Holmes is the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Dean of the Memphis Theological Seminary in Memphis, TN. She holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University, an MDiv from Columbia Theological Seminary, and a JD from the Walter F. George School of Law. Dr. Holmes is a scholar, author, teacher, and community leader. Among her publications are: Joy Unspeakable: Contemplative Practices of the Black Church (Fortress Press, 2004), Race and Cosmos: An Invitation to View the World Differently (Trinity Press Inter- national, 2002), and A Private Woman in Public Spaces: Barbara Jordan’s Speeches on Ethics, Public Religion, and Law (Trinity Press Inter-national, 2000). In addition to her books, Dr. Holmes has published numerous articles and is a nationally sought after speaker and lecturer. She is the recipient of many fellowships, grants and awards including the John Templeton Science and Religion Syllabus Award in 2001.

The Reverend Dr. Gemechis D. Buba serves as Director for African National Ministries for the Evangelical Outreach/Congregational Ministry Unit of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, with responsibility for developing new congregations among African immigrants. Dr. Buba holds a DMin in mission leadership from Columbia Theological Seminary and an MDiv from MeKane Yesus Theological Seminary in Addis Abbaba. A native of Ethiopia, Dr. Buba has ministered in evangelical mission across Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Germany, England, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as the United States, in three languages: English, Oromo and Amharic. He has authored numerous articles, booklets and Christian education materials.

A Celebration of Black Sacred Music! A service of performance and worship featuring a variety of sacred music from the Black Church tradition. The Lutheran Theological Seminary Choir will be joined by guest soloists under the direction of Dr. Verolga Nix, founding Director of the Intermezzo Choir Ministry, and Mr. Mark Mummert, the Seminary Musician and contributor to Evangelical Lutheran Worship. This concert will have guest accompaniment by Mr. John Custis, teacher of music and piano at the Settlement School of Music and Organist and Choir Director at the Second Baptist Church of Germantown.

The Reverend Otis Moss, III currently serves as Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, IL, under the leadership of Senior Pastor, The Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Prior to Trinity, Rev. Moss served as pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, GA. Rev. Moss — the youngest lecturer to ever present to the Hampton University Ministers and Musicians Conference, the largest African American ecumenical conference in the nation — has done extensive research in the areas of African American culture and theology and youth development. This led him to create the Issachar Movement, a consulting group designed to bridge the generation gap within churches and to train a new generation of prophetic church leadership. Rev. Moss is an alumnus of Morehouse College and Yale University.

The Reverend Dr. Alvan N. Johnson, Jr. has served as Pastor of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Bloomfield, CT, for 26 years. He received a BA from the University of Massachusetts and holds a ThM and DMin from Boston University. Active in church and civic organizations and academe, he serves as the First District Director of Social Action of the AME Church and on the Advisory Board of the Christian Conference of Connecticut. He was recently appointed presiding elder of Brooklyn/West Chester, NY. Dr. Johnson is an adjunct professor at Hartford Seminary and Yale University. He teaches, lectures, and preaches in six of Connecticut’s prisons, and he has received numerous honors and awards from community and civic organizations.

The Reverend Gregory Holston is Pastor of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Trevose, PA. Rev. Holston received a BA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a JD from Georgetown University, and is an alumnus of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. In May 2007, he was elected President of the Black United Methodist Preachers, an association representing 32 pastorates in the greater Philadelphia area. Pastor Holton’s vision is to build a church for all people through vibrant worship, warm fellowship, bible-based discipleship, holistic ministries, and enthusiastic evangelism that is open to the entire community seven days a week. Active in the Feasterville Interfaith Ministerium, he is a leader in the community. Rev. Holston is also a member of the Black Religious Scholars Group.
