New Students, Fall 2006

Elizabeth Nees

Elizabeth NeesFOLLOWING COLLEGE GRADUATION, I spent one year with Urban Servant Corps living in an intentional Christian community dedicated to living simply, working toward peace and justice and living out faith through community service. The following year, I experienced first-hand the global Christian community, issues of poverty, peace and justice, education, and war when I served in Cairo, Egypt under the umbrella of the ELCA's Young Adults in Global Mission program.

Returning home after this year of service was most challenging. I felt I had entered a level of spirituality that was more mine and more authentic than ever with the peace and justice that Jesus begs at the center. There is not one single event that led me to this place, it is rather a convergence of experiences, voices, self maturity and, most importantly, the workings of the Holy Spirit.

I was fortunate to experience firsthand the sense of community in many settings during my visit to LTSP. Attending worship in the chapel was engaging, challenging and life-giving. I was excited to see student/professor communities dining together with a variety of conversations at hand. Finally, I was moved to see the racial and ethnic diversity of the student body as well as the variety of opinions, backgrounds and experiences within that body. This demonstrates that diversity is more than a statistic on paper at LTSP; rather, the community is truly engaged in its diversity.
