New Students, Fall 2006

Steven Wilco

Steven WilcoI GREW UP GOING TO CHURCH WITH MY MOM, singing hymns as soon as I could read the words, and watching with great interest what was going on. I always had a love for being in church, but I didn't first begin to listen to God calling me to pastoral ministry until early high school. I asked my pastor a lot of questions and he encouraged my pursuit of ministry. It was his nurturing, and the support of my congregation, that led me to keep praying about it, even when I prayed saying to God that I couldn't do it.

When it was time to go to college, I searched for a place where I could begin my preparation for seminary, and I found Valparaiso University. There I began working at the chapel and taking advantage of the many opportunities available to students preparing for all kind of church ministries. For the first time my sense of call was affirmed by my teachers and peers. I found a love for liturgy in its many forms, and for the study of Scripture and theology. There I also found a warm welcome at Trinity Lutheran Church where I joined and became a member of the ELCA, and I continued to hear the call to go to seminary for pastoral ministry.

As I began looking for seminaries, I knew I was looking for some place with challenging academics and a rich worship life that would form me as a pastor. LTSP seemed to fulfill that description. Now that I am beginning my studies here, I feel welcomed into a supportive and loving community, and know that God is present with me.
